Fairy tale village

There is a magical place straight from a fairy tale in the south of Poland. Walls of old wooden cottages, items of every day use and even dogs’ kennels painted with fields of vibrant coloured flowers. This is a tradition dating back to end of XIXth century still alive with studios training new generations of village artists.

Although a typical village house in Zalipie today is not a traditional wooden cottage, this tradition is visible even in the modern build farms, yet the old croaky houses are incredibly impressive and pretty.

The oldest decorative motifs are based on simple geometric and floral designs. Artists traditionally used natural pigments and basic tools made with straw or horse hair. Modern patterns are more sophisticated. When in the area one should visit the beautifully decorated house of Felicja Curylowa, a renowned artist and holder of many awards, currently a part of the Tarnow Museum.

Another attraction of visiting Zalipie is an opportunity to get involved with local artists and to try and explore your own artistic talents.
